BACKGROUND Social capital is defined by political scientist Robert Putnam as "features of social organization, such as networks, norms and social trust, that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutual benefit" (quoted in Carpiano, 2006, p. 168). The literature indicates that social and emotional support are important components of social capital.
